The literary manuscripts consist of a two volume copy of Allen's doctoral dissertation on William Godwin, which was submitted to Harvard University in 1912. There are also several bound volumes of lecture notes on English literature, used in his teaching at New York University.

William Godwin (3 March 1756 – 7 April 1836) was an English journalist, political philosopher and novelist. Beverly Sprague Allen, author and educator, was born in San Francisco, California on April 9, 1881. Allen received his B.A. and M.A. degrees in English from the University of California at Berkeley in 1903 and 1905, respectively.
